The game of Chess is one of the world’s most popular games and has been around for centuries. Millions of people play daily, all over the world. As the quote above suggests, Chess was not always convenient and available for everybody! Throughout the Middle-Ages, chess was forbidden by the Church. Thus, clergy members invented the ‘folding’ chess board, so it could be incognito among the bookshelves to the powers that be.
